My various adventures of a "Going Outside and Doing Things" nature, mostly in the great outdoors of Colorado. Hiking, playing with the dogs, rock hunting, abandoned houses, gardening... and probably more!

October 26, 2011: And then it snowed

So my last post was in early October, at which point it had gotten rather suddenly cold. And I complained. We actually did get a light dusting of snow a couple days after that. But then it went back to really being very nice out, and we enjoyed a couple more weeks of pleasant temperatures. It was a nice fall, which is something we don't always get here.

And then it really snowed. I'm pretty sure it's the same storm system that's now assaulting the east coast, but it came through here and dumped a fair amount of snow on us. This is a lot of snow for us in October; the temperatures and snow in general aren't unheard of, but this is more than usual.

Click to embiggen pictures.

Our back deck area. And still snowing!

The neighbor's tree leaning over our fence (and the stupid little sumac we can't get rid of, which broke under the snow.)

The tree in the front. The branches aren't normally anywhere near the ground.

Those branches from underneath.

Our husky, Chai.

He looks a little terrified here, lol. He absolutely loves when it snows, though.

Chai expresses his love of snow by shoveling it. With his face.

And it's awesome.

We want him to make snow angels for us.

The snow has mostly melted, now, but is still clinging in the shadows. And we're supposed to get more next Wednesday. I can't wait. (Except it's that other thing, where I hate snow.)

I do have some nice pictures of the autumn color to post though, so I'll try and do that soon. :)

First week in October...

And it's officially cold. I'm sure this will seem pleasantly warm by comparison in a few weeks, but right now I am not okay with it! Obviously my hatred of cold weather means I live in the wrong state, though Colorado has been kind to me so far this year... sometimes it gets like this in September.

This does mean the end of the gardening season as well, which is kind of a shame. Our garden was a miserable failure this year, though... probably due to a combination of poor soil and a nasty hailstorm that made everything start over partway through the summer. We got ONE solitary tiny squash, a couple handfulls of beans, and some peppers. The tomatoes have mostly rotted on the vine, and the few that have the potential to survive will likely die tonight when it drops below freezing. Alas.

We are trying to bring the peppers and the rosemary in for the winter, and Alex repotted them for it today. Theoretically you can get peppers to produce over the winter if you keep them happy, and that would certainly be nice. Also attempting to root some cuttings from the tomatoes in the hopes of having better luck next year. And I'll see if I can get some basil to play nice inside, as well.

Considering the price of gas, it's looking like we might not be able to fit in a few more end-of-season hikes. :(
So it's probably most likely that it'll be some backdated posts that make their way here in the near future.

Another Blog!

I've been wanting to start this blog for a while. I love doing things outside, and I love taking pictures when I do so. I'd love to have somewhere to share these, and figured I'd make a blog to do so. Unfortunately, my procrastination makes for this situation: starting a blog dedicated to the outdoors just when we're creeping up to fall and winter. Which is, of course, when I won't be going outside nearly as much. However, I certainly have all kinds of pictures from places I've gone in the last couple years, so I can make some back-in-time posts to fondly remember sun-filled days. It's possible (though not guaranteed) that this blog could include some non outdoors activities, if I feel like I'm doing something interesting enough to post about, but I intend it to mostly be for hiking and things like that.
